Merchant Spotlight: Gabe’s Chemo Duck

 

Founded by Lu Sipos after her son Gabe was diagnosed with cancer, this non-profit organization provides support for children and families living with cancer through the Chemo Duck – a plush companion that is designed to alleviate fear and anxiety in childhood cancer patients.

The cuddly Chemo Duck comes dressed in hospital scrubs and a bandanna and either a Hickman or port-a-cath style chemotherapy port. Developed with the help of child life specialists and medical professionals, the Chemo Duck Program helps introduce children and families to their new life and encourages healing through the power of play therapy.

The Chemo Duck store offers individuals and businesses the opportunity to provide a child (or many children) with a Chemo Duck of their own or donate ducks to hospitals participating in the program. Once a duck is purchased, the child can visit the Chemo Duck website, register their new friend and print out an official adoption certificate as well as other fun activities.

“When someone does something this wonderful for children, we need to do our part to help spread the word”, said Joe Palko from 3dcart, Chemo Duck’s e-commerce webhosting provide provider. 3dcart is pleased to have Gabe’s Chemo Duck Program as one of the tens of thousands of online stores powered by our eCommerce shopping cart software.

Merchant Marketing Spotlight: Ocean Eyes Polarized Sunglasses


Many eCommerce stores are started by entrepreneurs looking to serve a niche market or fill a void in the marketplace. In the case of Skip and Karen Ledingham, they were shocked by the price of polarized sunglasses and set out to create a line of polarized eyewear that was not only stylish but realistically priced.

How OrnamentMall.com Prepares for the Holidays

In our business it feels like Christmas is year-around. It’s amazing how many US and international collectors like to add to their Hallmark ornament collections all year. But, as November approaches, our orders increase dramatically. The serious collectors shop more as they get their trees out and decide to finish a certain series or start collecting a new series. We also get a lot of first-time customers who buy only one specific type of ornament for their grandkids, best friend or parents.

Either way, business picks up in a major way starting in November and doesn’t slow down until after January.

Getting the Word Out

Starting in October, we increase the bandwidth of OrnamentMall.com with 3dcart so that our site can handle a high volume of shoppers. It’s better to have too much bandwidth than not enough. This year we focused on making our Google AdWords campaign more efficient. We did this by working with 3dcart’s Search Marketing Department. We wanted to make sure our keywords were drawing the right shoppers. There are a lot more people “clicking” this time of year so we wanted to make each click count. AdWords, organic search engine results, and word-of-mouth are the avenues we take to reach new customers.

Stocking Up on Supplies

Also starting in October, we make sure we have all necessary supplies on hand. These include invoice paper, shipping labels, toner, boxes, tape, packing material, etc. It is much better to have extras than to run out of something. During this busy season, we can not go a day without shipping. And running out of supplies would put us way behind.

Promote, Promote, Promote

We advertise our promotions on our site’s homepage so all our visitors can take full advantage of what we have to offer. We also send emails to our mailing list to keep our loyal customers in the loop. We offer daily deals using the 3dcart plugin. And we offer free shipping on all orders over $50 and offer low flat-rate shipping on all orders.

Making Your Customer Feel at Home

Ornament Mall is a home-based business that started before online shopping existed and there are important elements that keep that personal feel. Most orders go out same day or next day, which ensure that they are received within 3 to 5 days. We accept personal checks and take phone orders. If we are out of an item, we help the customer locate it through another source.

Finishing Strong

We ship all of our orders through the US Postal Service. It is important to have a good relationship with your shipper. We use the Endicia 3dcart plugin to post our packages and provide a SCAN report to our carrier so that the post office can process our shipments quickly.

My advice for new merchants in their first holiday season is to make sure your website can be found on search engines and social networking sites. Search engine optimization is crucial because it doesn’t matter how great your website is if customers can’t find it. Allparts Saves Thousands, Logs 2 Million Monthly Page Views After Switching to 3dcart

Allparts Music Corporation has provided guitar and bass parts to manufacturers, wholesalers, musicians, luthiers, retail stores and guitar repair shops all over the world since 1982. With more than 5,000 products in its Houston, TX warehouse, the company is the world’s largest distributor of guitar, bass and amplifier parts, featuring distribution across six continents. Over the years, Allparts has developed a unique business structure, splitting sales between business and consumer audiences.

3DCART RESULTS:
Allparts launched with 3dcart in October 2012. The new software platform drove immediate results, including:

• 25% reduction in site response time
• 20% increase in page views
• Around 33% increase in per-visit page views
• 3% decrease in bounce rate
• An extra 600 visitors a day
• 2 million monthly page views
• 150,000 unique monthly visitors

On the financial side, Allparts saves tens of thousands of dollars using 3dcart over Volusion. According to Dean, the results since the switch have been enormous—and it’s only the beginning.
“In our industry, Allparts is recognized as a brand that sets the standard for quality, price and customer service,” Dean adds. “If we want to keep that status, we need a reliable, excellent software partner. 3dcart fulfills that need.

THE STORY:
In 2009, Dean Peckenpaugh, Allparts’ IT director, saw the need for a new software platform. A few years prior, he’d worked with Volusion and had a strong experience. But after the transition, Dean began to notice something didn’t feel right.

“Volusion had undergone a huge migration, moving all of its content off of Rackspace and onto in-house servers. Soon after, the company started experiencing problems with uptime for its stores. That problem continues today.”

To make matters worse, working with Volusion threatened Allparts’ unique business model. Segmenting customers with Volusion required an enormous amount of custom code that Dean had to continually evaluate and update.

“Every time Volusion changed something, we were concerned about how it might affect the site,” says Dean. “There were actually times when things suddenly broke. It made us feel vulnerable as a business.”

Dean spent time asking questions in independent e-commerce forums, where 3dcart CTO Jimmy Rodriguez is a frequent contributor. He invited Dean to demo 3dcart, and a new relationship was quickly born. Allparts decided to make the transition.

“Not only do we pay lower fees with 3dcart—it’s also a slimmer platform that consumes less bandwidth than Volusion to perform the same actions,” Dean explains. “We get more bandwidth with 3dcart and use less. Even if we went over our core package, which we rarely do, it wouldn’t cost us half as much as Volusion.”

Price was only part of the equation. Three other core strengths within 3dcart helped sway Dean:
Ease of Use: 3dcart requires no custom code or design. Dean is able to configure frontend presentation and backend settings with very little hassle.
